The two leaders are expected to meet before the middle of August with Anastasiades wishing to freely discuss all Cyprus problem-related issues, according to the papers.
Government Spokesman Prodromos Prodromou said on Sunday that Anastasiades and Akinci, that are scheduled to meet before the middle of August, will make an effort to restart the talks.
He said Anastasiades’ wish is to discuss freely and go over all the subjects in order to reach the resumption of the talks. He noted that this has to take place within an appropriate climate, without Turkey’s provocations or illegal interventions.
Prodromou said it was not clear yet whether UN Secretary General’s special envoy Jane Holl Lute would be present at the meeting of the two leaders.
“We hope that the meeting will revolve around the real issues of the Cyprus problem without any effort to include other issues that might be a factor of obstruction or distraction,” he said.
He also said that that talks cannot restart as long as the other side continues to provoke, to violate rights and to cause tension.
Invited to comment on a statement by Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay that the talks will not restart from the point they left off in Crans-Montana, Prodromou said that the GC side’s intention is to begin the talks from the point they left off in order to utilize the progress that has been made rather than beginning from scratch, but also to avoid any attempts to divert the procedure from the UN framework.

Nicosia wants changes in UNFICYP mandate resolution

Nicosia is in a race to see improvements in the wording of the UN Security’s resolution on the renewal of the UNFICYP mandate due to a thorny issue, the papers report.
According to the papers that cite the correspondent of the Cyprus News Agency in the US, Apostolos Zoupaniotis, the resolution, which is expected to be adopted on Wednesday if all goes well, calls for the creation of mechanisms aimed at more systematic information exchange between the two communities to avoid tensions and negative incidents. This was on the suggestion of Guterres which however, Nicosia sees as a thorny issue.
A diplomatic source said that the wording of the resolution is aimed at reinforcing the mandate of the UN Secretary-General and Lute’s mission to achieve an agreement on the terms of reference.
The dailies recalled that the UN Secretary-General, referring in his recent report on the positions of the two sides on military mechanisms said that while the TC side expressed its willingness to consider new strengthened mechanisms, the GC side was wary of any new arrangements which could be considered to provide recognised status to the other community, arguing instead that these issues need to be addressed through the existing technical committees.
Politis also reported that the US have insisted more intensively than other times in the urgency of the restart of the talks and hinted that perhaps deadlines should be put in place on the next round of talks.
A similar precondition was also set by the Turkish vice president during statements on Saturday in the occupied areas, the daily reported.
Phileleftheros reported that the government has already expressed its positions through contacts of the Republic’s Permanent Representative at the UN Andreas Mavroyiannis with UN Security Council members.
